I began my aviation career over 30 years ago,selling small airplanes at New Orleans Lakefront Airport, and flying float planes and amphibians in the Louisiana oil field. My licenses include Seaplane, G-1, DC-9, B-727, B-757, B767 and my present flying is International Captain on the MD-11 for a major freight company. It has been my great fortune to have flown many different types of aircraft, including two helicopters. I have logged landings in over 40 countries. I am CEO and co-founder, with my wife Anna, of Palm Beach Airlines, LLC, and Founding Editor and Publisher of Very Light Jet Magazine. I have over six years of immersion into the study of VLJs. Check out Stuart Lau's article in the February Pro Pilot magazine, and watch for my response. His call for third-party IS-BAO certified auditors and a continuous monitoring program is right on track. Charging Mentor applicants upwards of $10K for a type-rating, Mentor training, and expenses for unspecified remuneration and unknown utilization is going to turn off a whole lot of the experienced professional pilots that the insurance companies and FAA are hoping will get involved. Plus, it seems only reasonable to assume that there will be subtle but significant pressure from the manufacturers (who will select and train "their" free-lance Mentors) to certify their customers as quickly and painlessly as possible. It is not hard to imagine a Mentor who insists on a professional attitude and performance from a relatively inexperienced customer being shunted aside for more accommodating Mentors. And what about liability? A freshly-minted 18-year-old CFI with 200 hours has few job options, and he has little to lose if his student prangs a Cessna 150 during practice. But what actions might be taken against a seasoned professional with a few bucks in a retirement fund when his millionaire student shows off his new toy to a few rich friends and they create a smoking hole? Think about it---------------
